Liza Lo shares new single ‘What I Used To Do’
Today, London-based producer and singer-songwriter Liza Lo has shared a new single titled ‘What I Used To Do’. The single follows her recent tracks ‘Confiarme‘, which she recently released a live performance video for, and ‘A Messenger’ - her debut for independent analogue specialist label, Gearbox Records (home to Abdullah Ibrahim, Binker & Moses, Thiago Nassif, Levitation Orchestra, Graham Costello, and more).
Having recently completed a sold-out EU / UK tour with Australian indie-folk songwriter Harrison Storm as well as short UK headline run, Liza has been on a rapid word-of-mouth ascent with shows across both London and her hometown of Amsterdam. The new single follows her self-released ‘Flourish’ EP, which saw her earn widespread playlist support and early plaudits at both press and radio, for her tender and meditative take on indie-folk.
Drawing inspiration from the likes of Beabadoobee, Julia Jacklin, and Men I Trust, Liza Lo’s sound meets an intersection where gentle folk-inspired instrumentation meets indie-pop. Conceived at a writing camp in the Netherlands, the new single sees Liza singing passionate vocals over warm country-tinged chord progressions and retro pop-inflected synth and bass. The track is by far Liza's most hook-driven offering to date and shows yet another facet of her ever expanding sound.
Speaking on the writing of the single, Liza says: "We wanted to write a song that feels familiar yet fresh with a bit of a punch to it! Hebe, Wouter and I started chatting about our influences and we spoke about different artists including Clairo, Cleo Sol and Dijon and we were just hanging out talking about life. We were speaking about how you can just daydream and wanted to make this verse feel like you’ve just woken up from a slumber on a sunny day in your living room. We really aimed to make this song a fun little letter to yourself, reminding you how times change, you change and growth allows for this magical space where you really can just let go of the past and your old self. A song written to motivate you to not take everything so seriously and simply embrace change. A day in the life, focussing on a good vibe, the perfect main character feel is on."
