Today, Stones Throw is proud to release the new album from Eddie Chacon, Sundown. This collection of twelve new songs sees the “low-key R&B legend” work with John Carroll Kirby to reach higher highs and plumb greater depths than ever before.
Eddie’s story is by now well known: after achieving stratospheric success as one half of the duo Charles & Eddie, whose hit “Would I Lie To You” topped charts around the world, Chacon took over two decades away from the music industry. Meeting John Carroll Kirby in 2019 inspired him to return to music, and together they created the 2020 album Pleasure, Joy and Happiness – a word-of-mouth hit and source of much comfort during a tumultuous time.
Though Pleasure… was intended as a swan song, its warm reception spurred Eddie to write more soulful music, kickstarting a new, creative phase in his life. In October 2021, Eddie and John Carroll Kirby visited Ibiza, where they stayed in a villa offered to them by a fan who said Pleasure… had helped get him through the pandemic. In their temporary home set into a green hillside overlooking a beach called Siesta, Eddie and John wrote the first half of Sundown.
During Sundown’s creation, Pharoah Sanders’s “Greeting to Saud” was a daily listen. Instead of emulating its sound, Eddie absorbed its deeper lesson, that simplicity wins out over virtuosity every time. As he puts it: “As I’ve gotten older, I have a wider brush and it takes me fewer brush strokes to cover an area.” Eddie and John finished the album at 64 Sound Studios in northeast Los Angeles, joined by Logan Hone (flutes and saxophones) Elizabeth Lea (trombone), Will Logan (drums) and David Leach (percussion).
Eddie says that only at his age – 59 – could he have the life experience and quiet confidence to sing about such subjects as “the experience of waking up one day and realizing that you're someplace you never expected to be” (“Comes and Goes”); “being humbled by how little time we have on this earth” (“Sundown”), and “realizing that oftentimes we are the only person standing in the way” (“Step By Step”). That this new record exists at all is a surprise to its creator. He says, “Sundown is the follow-up I never thought I would get to make.”
