Creature Cult share debut single ‘ughly’

Creature Cult are a duo from Colchester, Essex consisting of Connar Ridd (vocals/guitar) and Jonn Downham (synths/backing vocals) who twist genres with impactful messages, blending the likes of punk, rock, pop and electronic into an anarchic mix. Being outcasts most of their lives, they stand with the kids society pushes out -  the LGBTQ+ community, the misfits, the kids with coloured hair and smudged makeup who have to shout louder to be heard.

With songs about homophobia, sexism, football hooliganism, and mental health problems, they are unafraid to speak up and fight against out-dated social conventions and injustices whilst wrapping it up in raw guitars, and an electronic/trap sound, similar to the likes of Lil Peep, and Ghostmane. Embracing alt-culture, they’re also inspired by bands like Nirvana and Green Day.

‘ughly’ is their debut single and is about saying f*ck you to everyone who tries to tear you down and make you feel like you can’t be who you are. It’s for those who are tired of being made to feel small or like they should fit in a box when that difference and individuality are beautiful.

Explaining the track further, Connar said, “I had to leave a job recently because I was told I didn’t dress the way they wanted me to when I was dressed perfectly fine. If someone without piercings and tattoos and bleached hair would have worn the same thing I doubt there would have been an issue. I’m bored of being made to feel like an alien for just trying to be who I am, this song is exactly about it. It’s about paranoia to leave the f*cking house because you’re thinking about what homophobic comment someone is gunna say when you’re queuing in the corner shop. About feeling exhausted to be yourself because people try and make it hard for you to be. But there is a community for people who stick together and stand tall, a community where difference is celebrated and we are all ‘freaks’ together, and this song is a f*ck you to the people who try to take that away.”

Jonn adds, “I was recently sitting at a bus stop and had a group of guys hurling the foulest homophobic comments at me simply because I was wearing makeup and dressed in a faux-fur coat. It's both crazy and sad that there are people who still have these sorts of views towards others simply for being or looking different to what's considered 'normal'. It's not okay”

Creature Cult are from the small towns that make you feel like you should be somebody else, from the suburban areas where the normal and boring towers over you like skyscrapers. They are for the queer kids, the unapologetic misfits with red, blue or whatever colour hair, the kids with smudged makeup. They exist in a world where to be called freak and ugly is normal and where dressing up is beautiful.

This is the world of Creature Cult, are you in?
